MANCHESTER, England -- David Moyes is set to pay the price for Manchester Uniteds spectacular and sudden decline by being fired as manager of the deposed English champions, with his departure potentially being sealed on Tuesday. United stayed silent Monday, refusing officially to guarantee Moyes future at Old Trafford amid widespread reports in online stories by British newspapers that his 11-month tenure was about to end after losing the support of the board. It appears Moyes position has become untenable since Sunday, when United lost 2-0 to Everton in the Premier League to ensure Englands biggest club over the last two decades will miss out on Champions League qualification for the first time in 19 years. It also left United seventh in the league, a season after winning its 20th championship by 11 points, and on course for its lowest league finish since 1990. Even being the so-called "Chosen One" -- a nickname given to Moyes after he was hand-picked for the position by predecessor Alex Ferguson -- is unlikely to save the 50-year-old Scot, who signed a six-year deal at a club famed for preaching the values of stability. Leading British bookmakers have all slashed their odds on Moyes being removed and many of Tuesdays newspapers are reporting Ryan Giggs, a club great who is on the coaching staff at United, could take temporary charge until the end of the season. "Theyre going to have to clarify this position quickly," said former United defender Gary Neville, who described the clubs handling of the situation as "repulsive." "The average manager gets sacked every 12 months and Ive always felt Manchester United should be different, hold themselves up as a club that basically stands against whats happening in the game." Nevilles brother, Gary, is a member of Moyes coaching team. Moyes has been unable to continue the success of Ferguson, who ended his 27-year reign at the end of last season after winning the league for his 38th major trophy as United manager. Moyes guided United to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, losing to Bayern Munich, but the teams domestic form has been woeful by its high standards. United is 23 points behind current leader Liverpool, 13 adrift of the Champions League places, and has slumped to a string of humiliating losses including to fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester City at home. United has been defeated a club-record 11 times in the league and 10 times in 22 matches in all competitions in 2014. The deposed champions appear ready to spend considerable sums over the summer to strengthen its squad but their American owners, the Glazer family, may not be willing to trust Moyes to oversee such heavy spending. He was indecisive in the transfer window in the last off-season, bringing in only Marouane Fellaini from former club Everton for 27.5 million pounds ($43 million), and the Belgium midfielder has been a disappointment. United broke its club record transfer fee to sign Juan Mata for 37.1 million pounds ($61.2 million) in January but Moyes has been unable to regularly play the Spain playmaker in his best position. Dutch coach Louis van Gaal and Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp have been linked with any possible vacancy. With fan backing appearing to ebb away, Moyes said after the loss to Everton that United was "on track" in its transition period post-Ferguson. "We are rebuilding," he said, "we have got things we want to do. "The supporters have been incredibly behind the team and supported the team throughout. They realize it has been a difficult season ... They understand it has not been good, I recognize it has not been good, it needs to be better." Cheap Jerseys From China . Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, In Saturdays Bruins at Canucks game, Reilly Smith scores, and then continues on and runs into Luongo. Clearly Smiths elbow contacts Luongos head. Horrible non-call "hit to the head" after the goal was scored. Why are the referees so afraid to make the call after a goal is scored? Thanks,Murray ----Murray: There is no question that Reilly Smith was guilty of charging when he crashed into Roberto Luongo after the puck entered the net. The goal would stand since the puck crossed the line prior to the infraction but a minor penalty should have been assessed to Smith. Let me attempt to explain why the referee might not have reacted to the contact on Luongo and therefore did not call a penalty. From the refs position (behind the goal line, on the same side of the net that Smith approached Lou) the referee was focused on multiple elements of this bang-bang play. First, there was potential for a penalty shot to be called if a foul from behind had resulted once Christopher Tanev gave chase from his opposite-side defensive position. Tanev attacked from a back-side angle and made stick-to-stick contact with Smith just as the shot was being taken from outside the goal crease. Tanev then slid behind Smith making very light physical contact with the back of the Bruin player. At this point the referee would have determined that a legal stick check had been attempted by Tanev and would then focus on the puck entering the net to determine a legal goal. Given the close proximity and contact between Smith in the lead lane and Tanev from the back door the referee would most likely also conclude that Smith was bumped into the crease as he attempted to stop.dddddddddddd Contact by the defending player would negate goalie interference or charging on the play. Reilly Smiths primary focus was to score a goal and elude the check of Tanev. Following this, Smith found that he was very tight to Luongos crease and rapidly running out of real estate after his shot was taken. None of this gives a player the green light to crash into the goalkeeper. He must stop, avoid or minimize any contact with the goalkeeper as defined in rule 69. There was insufficient effort made by Smith to stop, avoid or even minimize contact with Luongo. While Smith didnt deliver his elbow to make contact with Luongos head it certainly was the end result with the goalies posture low and in a butterfly position. As I stated from the outset of this analysis a charging penalty should have been assessed to Reilly Smith. I would go so far as to say that a penalty would be called 99 out of 100 times for goalie interference on a play such as this if the puck had not entered the net so your point is well taken Murray. I dont believe however that the majority of referees are reluctant to call a penalty after a goal has been scored. Ive said it before and it bears repeating; too much is missed whenever a referee assumes a position behind the goal line! From this location a referee is unable to draw an angle on players crease crashing as he looks through the back of the net and traffic in an effort to find the puck. From that deficient vantage point there was just too much going on for the referee to catch the finishing hit on Roberto Luongo. ' ' '
